The SENIA Advocacy Award honors a student, adult or group that celebrates the achievements of people with disabilities; encourages awareness of the abilities and aspirations of people with disabilities; and advocates on behalf of exceptional people in Asia.

Who May Submit Nominations?

Nominations may be made by

  • Teachers
  • Principals
  • Related service providers
  • Friends
  • Parents

Award Selection Criteria

The SENIA Advocacy Award Review Committee, which is made up of selected SENIA members from Asia, will select one winner who fulfills the SENIA mission statement:

  • Raising awareness of special needs in Asia
  • Advocating for special needs in Asia
  • Effort in raising awareness and advocacy
  • Impact on the local, national and international community

Nomination Requirements

  • Nominations must be submitted digitally via the nomination form.
    • All materials submitted become the property of SENIA and will not be returned.
  • All nomination materials (including supporting documentation) must be submitted together.
    • If writing in your native language, please provide an English translation
  • Each candidate must be nominated by one individual (e.g., teacher, principal, related service provider, friend, parent). The nominator does not need to be a SENIA member.
    • Double-check that the nominee’s name is spelled correctly on ALL materials, as it will be printed on his or her Certificate of Accomplishment.
  • A photo of the candidate must be submitted with the nomination materials.  This photo will be used in a presentation of the SENIA Advocacy nominees at the SENIA Conference.
  • The student must answer one of the following questions:
    • What inspires or motivates you to advocate for yourself and/or your peers with special education needs?
    • What do you hope to achieve by advocating for yourself and/or your peers with special education needs?

Award Benefits

  • Be invited to attend a special awards ceremony and celebration at the SENIA Conference.
  • Receive two nights’ accommodation and flights to attend the SENIA conference with a chaperone if needed.
    • Please be aware that all visas are at expense of the winner and chaperone.  Your passport must be valid for 6 months in order to travel in Asia.
  • Receive a plaque honoring the award winner.
  • Receive a financial scholarship of $1500 USD
  • Have the opportunity to present a short presentation (10 minutes) at the SENIA conference sharing your inspirational story of awareness and advocacy for special needs.
  • Be featured on SENIA’s website.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Candidates must be 2–21 years of age when they are nominated.
  • Candidate must live in Asia.
  • The nominee must have an identified disability.
